Who was Sharon Tate?

Sharon Tate was an American actress and model of  late 1950’s and 1960’s. She was one of the most promising Hollywood newcomer. She was born on January 24, 1943 as Sharon Marie Tate Polanski at Culver City, California, United States to Paul James Tate, an officer in the United States Army, and Doris Tate, a criminal Rights activist. She is mostly remembered for her role in “The valley of Dolls“.She was known for her beauty and perfect comedic timing. Among the three siblings she was the eldest. In her early career she started  in advertisements and small television role.

As her father was in the army, her family moved frequently to different cities so she had a limited number of friend circle. During her childhood she was shy and lack of confidence. She started her modelling career at her very young age. She won a number of beauty contest. She won her first beauty contest before she turned one year old.

Due to frequent shiftness of cities, she attended several schools. She attended South Shaver Elementary in Texas; Chief Joseph Junior High School in Columbia; High School in Richland, Washington; Irvin High School, Texas; and she graduated from Vicenza High school, Italy. In 1959 she was crowned the title of ‘Miss Richland’ in Washington. She was also voted “Homecoming Queen” of her school in Italy.

Acting Career of Sharon Tate

Sharon Tate worked in many advertisements of Television and Magazine. She was also casted as an extra artist in some Italian films. She entered in the Hollywood with Barbara film in 1961. In the early 1960’s she appeared as an extra artist in the ” The Adventures of  Young man”. However her first break came when was casted in the Television series as “Janet Trego” in the ” The Beverly Hillbillies” in 1962. In 1964, Tate made a screen test for Cincinnati Kid and she also auditioned unsuccessfully for the role of The Sound of Music.

However her major role came when she was casted in the 1966 crime and horror movie “Eye of the Devil”. In 1967 came ” The Fearless Vampire Killers” where she met her future husband, director Roman Polanski. In the same year came her another film “Valley of the Dolls” and “Don’t Make Waves”, in 1968 came the “The Wrecking Man” where she was casted opposite Dean Martin.

In 1969 came her last film ” The Thirteen chairs” also called “Twelve plus One”. It was a comedy film. She was murdered before it release. Even though her acting career was short she gave a great impact in the field of acting and modelling.

Sharon Tate married to filmaker Roman Polanski. Polanski was already married to actress Barbara Kwiatkowska in 1959 and divorced in 1962. Tate was also dating Jay Sebring, a Hollywood hairstylist, before she met Polanski. She left Jay fot the Polanski. Even after Tate married Polanski they were very close. Jay was one of them keeping Tate’s company on the day Tate was murdered.

She met Polanski in the mid 1960s. They were introduced to each other by film producer Martin Ransohoff. At first their meetings were awkward. Polanski didn’t even speak to her at their first date.  Later on they fell in love and were married on January 20, 1968. Polanski once said ” In those days she was not just the love of my life, she was the love of everyone’s life”. He also said he shall remain faithful to her till the day he die. They were together till Tate died on August 9, 1969

Sharon Tate was only 26 years old when she died on August 9, 1969 at Los Angeles, California, USA. Tate was murdered at her residence 10050 Cielo Drive in Beverly Hills, neighbourhood of Los Angeles. She was mudered along with her unborn child, Screen writer Wojciech Frykowski, his girlfriend Abigail Folger, and her ex-boyfriend Hollywood hairstylist Jay Sebring.

Tate murders were a series of murders perpetuated by memebers of the followers of cult leader Charles Manson (Manson family). Charles Manson was a pretty criminal who had been in and out of jail since childhood. She was stabbed 16 times by the Manson family. Manson and other four members were arrested and  sentenced to death. However due to abolition of capital punsihment their sentences were commuted to life in prison.
