Humphrey Bogart was an American Oscar winning actor. He, popularly called as Cultural icon, was known for playing toughest of the tough guy-smoking,drinking and fighting. He popularise smoking to an all new level. All the youngsters and new actors tried to imitate the characters he portrayed in his films.

His iconic Characters include Rick Blaine in Casablanca, Dukee Mantee in The Petrified Forest, Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon and Roy Earle in High Sierra. He gave a brilliant performances in some of the greatest films ever made in the history of cinema. In 1999 he was ranked as the greatest male star in the history of America by the American Film Insitute. His character as a ‘tough guy’ lasted a quarter of a century and 75 films. He was inducted into Hollywood Walk of Fame posthumously on february 8, 1960.

His father was a prominent cardiopulmonary surgeon and his mother was an art direcot of the ” The Delineator” – an old American women magazine. Their family used to live in an upper West-Side apartment.Their family was rich and own a cottage on Canadaigua Lake, USA. His friends used to call him ‘Bogie’.

Her mother used to earn a large sum of money at that time even higher than his father.He was the eldest among his three siblings. He had two younger sister- Frances(Pat) and Catherine Elizabeth (Kay).     

The future great actor attended private Delanrey School until fifth grade school, later to the Trinity School in the Manhattan, New York. He also attended to the Philips Academy in Androver Town, Massachusetts, US. But he did not complete his studies. He left Philips Acemy after in 1918 after one semester. He was not good in his studies and failed in his class. Even he was expelled from the school for misbehaving to the headmaster, smoking and poor performances. He choose not to attend college.

He childhood was began in a well upbringing. His parents educated him in some of the best schools in that country at that time. His parenst wanted him to go to the Yale University. His parents were very disappointed when he left studies. 

In The Book ‘Humphrey Bogart: The making of a Legend’: which is based on unpublished memoirs and interviews with some of the contemporary actors of his time it is said that his father beat him so badly that his lip was split, then stitched it ip. It left him a permanent slip. He ran away to Broadway to find fame and fortune, later became a huge star in Hollywood.

The date of birth of Humphrey is in disputed. Some claimed that he was boron on January 23, 1900. According to Lauren Bacall, his wife, he used to celebrate on December 25, 189. His birth certificate and local newspaper listed on December 25, 1899. Biographers like Ann M. Sperber and Eric Lax confirms he was actually born on December 25, 1899.

Acting Career of Humphrey Bogart

One of the most iconic and finest great noir films stars in Hollywood history. He was famous for playing hard-boiled characters. But such a talented and charismatic actor took a long time to enter into A-list movies. He was stuck playing villain, gangster and supporting roles in more than a decades.

Bogart’s acting career began in 1921 in Broadway shows.Since then he regulary in the 1920s and 1930s for the Broadway productions. “The Dancing Town” (1928) was his debut film. In this period he was typecast as a gangster. His first great success film was “Petrified Forest” (1936) and his breakthrough as a leading man was High Sierra(1941) and The Maltese Falcon (1941).High Sierra helped him to achieve stardom.

It is unworthy not to mention “Casablanca” (1942) in the acting career of Humphrey Bogart. A romantic classic movie paired with Ingrid Bergman. People still remember the line at the end of Casablanca, ” Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman) asked, “what about us?, “We’ll always have Paris,” he(Bogart) says. That is they’ll alwyas be together in their memories.

His other prominent films include “To Have or Have not”, “The Big Sleep”, “Dark Passage”, “key Largo”, “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre”, “Sabrina”, “The Caine Mutiny” and “African Queen”. His last film was “The Harder The Fall” (1956).

First wife of Bogart-Helen Menken 

First wife of Bogart-Helen Menken Helen was a famous and versatile perfectionist American stage actress. She was best known actress of her generation, known as queen of Broadway. But she had never happened a film career. Her parents were deaf so she learn to talk by listening to strangers on the street. She wins fame at the age of 19 and became the youngest lady of Broadway.

They met in a set of Broadway. When Bogart met Helen she was already a famous star but Bogart was a struggling future star. They married on May 20, 1926. Bogart was also the first husband of Helen. 

However their marriage was short and lasted only for one year. They divorced on November 18, 1927

Second wife of Bogart – Mary Philips 

Second wife of Bogart- Mary Philips Mary Philips was a famous American stage and film actress. She was then an established actress in New York theatre at that time  but Bogart was then a little known stage actor. They married on April 3, 1928 at 24 street in Hartford, capital city of Us state of Connecticut. It was her first marriage. They were together for 10 years and divorced in 1938. The couple did not have any children.

She had a problem of severe alcoholismand a suicide attempt in 1943 due to Paranoid Schizophrenia- a condition where a person feels distrustful and suspicious of other people.

The couple had been known as “Battling Bogart” as Mayo Methot once stabbed him with a knife. The marriage lasted for seven years and divorced in 1945. Bogar left Mayo Methot for Lauren Bacall.

It was the first film of Lauren. She was only 19 years and Humphrey was 44. Despite an age gap of 25 years the two could not stop loving each other. He called Lauren as “Baby” They appeared together in 4 films- “To Have and Have Not”(1944),”The Big Sleep” (1946), “Dark Passage”(1947), “Key Largo”(1948) and a brief cameo in the 1946 movie “Two Guys From Milwaukee”.

Within a few months Bogart got divorced from his third wife Mayo Methot.They married on May 21,145 and stayed blissfully wed until Bogart’s death in 1957 . It was the first marriage of Lauren Bacall. 

In Bacall memoirs, she described him as gentle, open and shy. Tears streamed down Bogart’s face during their marriage. The couple had two children – Stephen Humphrey Bogart (born on January 16, 1949) and Leslie Howard Bogart (born on August 23, 1952). His son name was derived from his character’s name Stephen in “To Have or Have Not” and his daughter name was derived from Leslie Howard, a close friend and co-star in the “Petrifried Forest”. His son was a prominent author and documentary filmmaker; and his daughter was a nurse and a yoga instructor.

When and How did Humphrey Bogart did?

Humphrey Bogart was a heavy smoker and drinker. Due to prolonged smoking, an irregular malignant cells developed in Bogart’s esophageal tissue. The disease worsened and require immediate surgery. Had surgery  on March 1, 1956 but did not improve his health. He died of Throat Cancer at the age of 58 on 14 January 1957 at Los Angeles, California, USA. His body was cremated in Forest Lawn Memorial Park’s Glendale, California, US.
